This quote: “Fear is a natural reaction to moving closer to the truth.” Was exactly what I needed to hear today. And your story is so beautiful - it got me thinking fears come from and how to shift our understanding and thinking. Thanks for your wise words.
Fear, I’m slowly learning, is your exact clue to this scavenger hunt of life- of where you should dig deep and go. It’s your deepest desires. It’s where healing happens. And where freedom comes from.
MJ — "the bare, tender wanting is exactly what fear smells" is the line.
I work with bodies for a living and I've been chasing a sentence for that exact thing for years. The mother going quiet after death so the other voice could come through — that's something I keep noticing in midlife women.
Glad we crossed paths today; I'll be reading more.
I love the way you describe the evolution of your relationship with your mother and her voice after her passing. I am having a very similar experience, and it’s glorious. Such a gift. 💜
…What I hear now, when I am paying attention, is the other voice — the one who handed me the knife in the first place, and is, I believe, urging me along.
This sentence felt very true for me. My mother died in the spring of 2022. That summer I started sharing my essays publicly with a few friends in the small Swiss town where I live. I believe my mother was urging me along too! Thank you for this beautiful essay.

I’m exploring something similar from a different angle — writing about human behavior through a system design lens (like debugging internal patterns).
Just started publishing on Substack. If you ever get a moment to read, I’d genuinely value your perspective.
Also happy to support your work — feels like there’s an interesting overlap here.
What a wonderful article 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
